Tenderness (objects) is an exploration of using the physical sensation of touch to communicate the experience of, and longing for, human connection. In its original form, Tenderness is an endurance-based performance in which I engaged in an embrace with my best friend and collaborator, James Letten, at various public locations for an extended amount of time. It was our hope that those passing by would see our action and feel inspired to act more tenderly towards one another. Though the performance of Tenderness is documented on video, we were challenged by the idea of how a performance could also be an object. Tenderness (objects) is thus our attempt to create a timeless object from a time-based act. These shirts employ the use of a historic photographic printing process known as cyanotype printing- named so after the cyan color it produces when exposed to light. The shirts were worn during the act of our performance as the light wrapped around us– creating a reverse shadow of the form and placement of our bodies on one another.
